One taste and we know you'll agree - There's Nothing like a Real Italian. The "Real Italian Food " Explained
"Real Italian" is the way we describe all the food on our menu, but it's also the name of our incredibly popular signature sandwich that has become a veritable Icon. In 1903, Italian immigrant Giovanni Amato started selling fresh baked rolls to his fellow countrymen working on the docks of Portland, Maine. At the workers' request, Giovanni added a little meat, cheese and fresh vegetables and the "Real Italian" was born. In 1972, another Italian immigrant named Dominic Reali bought the business after working at the original India Street shop for 7 years. Dominic perfected the "Real Italian" by choosing Greek olives over black olives, a zestier pickle and his own specially blended oil. Today, the Amato's "Real Italian" sandwich is universally craved by countless customers from every age, sex, race and socioeconomic status. It's somewhat messy, surprisingly tangy and altogether different from any sandwich you've ever had. As Dominic Reali himself has claimed for years: "Try it 3 times, and you'll be hooked for life!"The same rolls that Giovanni Amato originally sold on the docks of Portland in 1902 are still produced by the Amato's Bakery today - proudly operated by Giovanni's great grandsons, John and Anthony. In addition to the Italian sandwich rolls and the traditional loaves of Italian bread Maine's Oldest Italian Bakery is famous for, the brothers also produce a full line of other breads including wheat, rye, bulky rolls, and dinner rolls. As an Amato's franchisee, you get the right to own and operate an Amato's franchise Sandwich Shop for ten years with two five-year renewal options. TestimonialsAccording to a spokesperson from R.L. Vallee, Inc. – a franchise partner with three Amato’s Xpress shops in Vermont – their participating Maplefields properties have a strong lunch business that is continuing to grow. And though, he says, it’s hard to directly tie the Xpress to the sale of incidentals - it seems the restaurant is playing a part in a large increase in the sale of non-Amato’s products – i.e. soda, chips, gas... "From design and construction to helping us hire and train staff, Amato’s has been consistently supportive in setting up our facilities,” said Otto Hanson, General Manager of Operations of R.L. Vallee. Robert Perkins, Marketing Manager of Irving Oil characterizes Amato’s support effort as “available and engaged in our daily business. We have been very impressed with the recent launch of an enhanced training group, in particular. Amato’s trainers visit our stores on a regular basis to communicate directly with us. This ongoing interaction has been extremely positive for our people.” He also says "we know our customers have been pleased with the addition of the Amato's Xpress in several of our locations. Our customers are particularly excited to learn they can select from a complete menu of hot or cold offerings prepared fresh for their convenience." Has Irving noticed an increase in by-product sales because of the Xpress (i.e. chips, soda, gas...)? Perkins says "as a private company, we would not divulge financial information. Anecdotally, we can tell you our customers are responding very positively to this addition." Ultimately, it is not about keeping up with the Jones... (or Subway), says Amato’s Jeff Perkins whose been on both sides of the business – as a franchisee and a franchisor. It’s about the performance of your strategic partners, in this case the Franchisee. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of wanting to open more and more stores. It takes a sort of will power to be satisfied with less openings but openings done well.
