Enter George "Jig" Warren III and Gary "Moe" Meszaros to save the day. Well maybe not necessarily the entire day, but certainly one old gas station and a bunch of muscle cars, by turning the abandoned station into the Quaker Steak & Lube, a "Cook Your Own Steak" restaurant. They gave the cars, which included a 1936 Chevrolet, frozen in time on the original hydraulic grease rack, a loving home. The concept was so successful that Jig and Moe were able to hire a cook so their customers no longer had to do their own cooking and the menu was expanded to include a variety of family friendly foods, including chicken wings. It is from these beginnings that the Quaker Steak & Lube family of restaurants began. Today, "The Lube" serves over 30 million wings annually, has 16 bottled sauces for retail sale, has won the title of "Best Wings USA," and has over 100 local, national, and international awards for their sauce recipes. With 12 current locations in four states, "The Lube" is still rescuing muscle cars, vintage cars, trucks and a vast selection of custom and antique motorcycles, giving them good homes hanging from the walls and ceilings in each restaurant. The Concept The founders of this unique concept, George "Jig" Warren and Gary "Moe" Meszaros, had previously created another restaurant and a nightclub in Sharon, Pennsylvania, with themes based on the original use of railroad buildings. In 1974, they bought a vacant automobile service station that they converted into a restaurant and bar and appropriately named it "Quaker Steak and Lube(R)." In 1976, the menu was expanded to include the newly popular Buffalo-style chicken wings. Prepared with a choice of unique sauces of their own creation, Quaker Steak and Lube's wings began to attract a large following. In 1988, they received their first major award as "Best Wings in the USA," winning the National Chicken-Out competition. Today, there are 16 different wing sauces with their degrees of "hotness" described on the menu's "Wing-O-Meter." The "cult" following of its wings, spurred by an imaginative promotional schedule, has made Quaker Steak and Lube immensely popular with families, couples and singles alike. Everyone from two to eighty-two loves The LUBETM! Truckloads of chicken wings arrive daily from the nation's top chicken processors, and Tabasco(R) and Frank's RedHot(R) sauce are purchased in 55-gallon drums.

The year was 1974, the country was in the midst of its first gas crisis and the price of gasoline was skyrocketing. Speed limits were soon to be set at 55 M.P.H. nationwide, gas stations were closing and the call went out to develop cars that got better mileage...but what to do with those old gas stations and high-powered muscle cars?
Its simple menu featured steaks, burgers, salads and baked potatoes, and customers were invited to "cook your own steak." But the primary attraction was the venue itself, filled with a fantastic array of automotive memorabilia. Classic cars, racing cars, hot rods and motorcycles hung from the ceiling, and the floor and walls were crowded with old gas pumps and racing paraphernalia.
