CEO of “Geeks on Call” Wins Prestigious Entrepreneur Award
|
Norfolk, VA – May 6, 2005 – Richard Cole, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the national on-site computer-services company Geeks On Call®, has been honored with the 2005 “High-Tech Entrepreneur Award” given by the Hampton Roads Technology Council and KPMG LLP as part of their “Tech Nite '05” banquet. This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial success in the development of a technology-based, commercial enterprise. The Hampton Roads Technology Council (HRTC) is the technology nerve center for southeastern Virginia. This non-profit organization is transforming the region and its technology companies into world-recognized leaders by driving growth through its promotion of Hampton Roads as an ideal location for new and expanding technology companies. Geeks On Call® is the high-tech equivalent of a physician who makes house calls. It was founded by entrepreneur Richard Cole, a corporate-turnaround specialist who has a proven track record of transforming struggling businesses into remarkable successes. Raised as the son of a Baptist preacher, Cole attended Oklahoma Baptist University, from which he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in Philosophy. Post college he entered the outdoor billboard division of the advertising industry and worked for Outdoor West from 1975 to 1986. During that time he became president of the company and was successful in turning around numerous business acquisitions. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Cole worked as a freelance turnaround specialist and successfully revamped another six business acquisitions. In the late-1990s, he joined the outdoor-advertising wing of Landmark Communications and served as their president of outdoor advertising. Upon retiring several years later, Cole quickly became bored with being stuck at home, so he searched for a fun business venture in which he could participate. It turned out that launching Geeks On Call® was exactly the type of opportunity he sought. Prior to Geeks On Call®, people often lost substantial time and money while waiting for their computer problems to be fixed by the in-store technicians at a local repair shop or electronics retailer. Richard Cole decided to change all of that by founding Geeks On Call® in 1999. Initially the company only served Hampton Roads, Virginia, where it experienced immediate success. In early 2001, Geeks On Call® began franchising its concept, and now it has 320 franchises located in 20 states throughout the U.S. (plus the District of Columbia). Everything the mobile Geek technicians need to complete their tasks is nestled inside their signature blue Chrysler PT Cruisers (affectionately dubbed “PC Cruisers” as a play on words) that are emblazoned with the Geeks On Call® logo and toll-free phone number. Not only have the Geeks’ prompt, reliable services found success with residential customers, but also with small-to-medium-sized businesses that cannot afford the enormous expense of hiring full-time IT personnel.
