Creating a cozy environment has as much to do with setting a mood for your entire home as it does with creating a comfortable space, Powell said.

"People's homes are their sanctuary. It makes sense to create an atmosphere that is warm and soothing," Powell said.

Powell offers the following tips on creating a warm, cozy home:

1. Lighting - Overhead lights can be harsh. By using more table and floor lamps, shadows and direct light will create dramatic visual effects. Use incandescent bulbs instead of halogen or fluorescent for a warmer glow. If you can't use lamps, install a dimmer switch for your ceiling light.

2. Colors and Fabrics - Deep tones of brown or green will make a space feel smaller. Luxurious, soft textures such as velour or chenille can enhance furniture, accessories like throw pillows, or window coverings. For walls, floors and fireplaces use rougher textures such as brick instead of glazed tiles or iron instead of chrome.

3. Patterns - The more patterns in a room, the smaller it will feel. In a smaller space, the rule of thumb is to don't overdo it. Judiciously mix in patterned upholstery, oriental rugs or printed wallpaper to add texture to a room.

4. Accessories - A big, makes-you-want-to-squeeze-it pillow is a quick, inexpensive touch that adds depth to furniture. Throw blankets can be draped over a sofa or reading chair to add color and texture. Floor screens can help visually separate space. Plants, family photos and area rugs create warmth and add a sense of identity to a room.
