"When spring arrives, we want our homes to look more open and spacious," said Powell. "It's time to roll up the wool rugs, put away the darker accessories and try a new coat of paint in honor of spring."

Powell offers simple ideas to brighten up your home for spring:

-Take down the heavy draperies and replace with light, cotton fabric or sheers. "Instead of keeping the cold out, now we want to open up to let the warmth in," said Powell.

-Enhance your existing sofa and chairs with floral patterned slipcovers or pillows. Cover up the heavy cotton cloth or dark leather furniture with a lighter, more comfortable fabric that will accommodate the warmer temperatures. "Simple floral-patterned throw pillows can add a touch of spring to any sofa or chair," said Powell.

-Rearrange your furniture. Give your home a new look by simply moving the furniture, wall hangings and various accessories. According to Powell, "At no expense, you can transition existing items in your house into different rooms for a seasonal transformation."

-Roll up the heavy rugs. Replace the winter wool rugs with a light cotton-weave Dhurrie rug or expose the floors to reveal the beautiful hardwood or tile.

-Add fresh flowers to each room. A floral bouquet of daisies, daffodils, tulips or pussy willows can serve as a table centerpiece or can be added to any room in the house for a touch of color, aroma and beauty.

-A coat of fresh paint does wonders. "If your walls are looking dull and dingy, a coat of paint is an inexpensive way to make your home look and feel new again," said Powell. "Pick one of the many variations of tinted whites for an instant touch of spring."
