E.V. businessman finds challenge in helping more franchisees find prosperity Bob Palmer is a longtime businessman in the East Valley who has developed a niche for his entrepreneurial acumen. Over the past three decades, Palmer has specialized in franchise operations and founded the Grease Monkey chain of 10-minute lube stations in the late 1970s. Since selling his ownership in that operation, Palmer has run several other franchise operations, including USA Fast Lube Systems and the New York Burrito Gourmet Wraps chain as well as helping many others. His latest venture is the New York NY Fresh Deli franchise, which features gourmet sandwiches, hot New York Style sus, fresh made salads, grilled Panini sandwiches, specialty wrap sandwiches and in some stores morning items and coffees including espresso, cappuccino and other beverages. "I’m most known as a high volume franchise guy," Palmer said. "That’s my claim to fame." Palmer and partner Clyde Culp III bought the New York Subs franchise company in August of 2002 and, over the past 21 months, have increased its presence from just two outlets to 81 open or planned franchise locations in the United States and the Middle East. Within the next 45 days an additional seven fresh deli restaurants will open, including outlets in Chandler and Peoria, Arizona as well as Wisconsin, Alabama and New Jersey. That’s in addition to an existing restaurant at the intersection of Ray and Dobson roads in Chandler, he said. "Our goal is to open a total of 10 here in the Valley," Palmer said. While Palmer has enjoyed success, he was pleased when the New York Burrito Gourmet Wraps chain, which was the largest and fastest growing from its start until McDonald’s got in the game, was sold in July of 2002. “Along with that particular transaction, we also sold our then public company Uptown Restaurant Group, Inc. and subsidiaries Fasta Pasta in Scottsdale, and One Potato Two Franchising. From this transaction we then bought back the New York Subs operation”.
