Fish Window Cleaning finds its hook for attracting franchisees
|
Mike Merrick never thought he would wind up cleaning windows let alone creating a service franchise business opportunity out of it. However, after his job at a Savings and Loan establishment was downsized, he bought a window cleaning business from the man who had cleaned his office windows, and the business grew from there. When he decided to branch out into franchising, he realized people weren't interested in window cleaning, so he had to look long and hard but he finally found his hook—a nine to five work schedule. "A Window cleaning franchise is not warm and cuddly or sexy," Merrick said. "But it does offer something appealing—a lifestyle. Window cleaning is a nine to five business with no weekend or night work required." Merrick found that most of the people who have come to Fish Window Cleaning found the franchise through a Franchise broker. Every single one of his franchisees have said they first dismissed the window cleaning business as a viable option, but once they found out about the schedule, they took another look. Fish Window Cleaning has attracted people from all walks of life from litigation lawyers to bankers to professional tandem bike racers. Merrick found that most of his franchisees were burnt out by the corporate life and looking for a change in their lifestyle. Fish Window Cleaning offers that perfect lifestyle opportunity. The franchises are not owner operated. That simply means that franchisees don't have to be window washers. They merely run the business side and have employees who do the washing. The franchise headquarters offers propriety software, national account referrals, annual meetings, tech support, and discounts from preferred vendors. "It is all very simple. This is a meat and potatoes kind of business," Merrick said. "It is easy to get started with only $75,000 to $110, 000 start-up. The hours are great and the business is simple to run." Merrick found getting started in the franchise business challenging. He soon found out that franchising is totally different from running a business. Recruting his first 20 franchisees was the hardest part, but he found once word got out about their 40-hour work week, things began to pick up. Fish Window cleaning now has 140 franchises in 170 territories with 25 percent of its business being residential and 75 percent commercial. The franchise currently operates in the United States and hopes to move into Canada by 2006 and eventually move into more countries.
