Tumbled stone is commonly found in marbles, travertine, and saturnia and is in demand primarily because they come in light beige or milky tones and have a distressed look. Larger pieces can be laid close together on a diagonal and brought into other rooms to create a large open feeling to the central gathering areas in homes.

Porcelain is a refined look that comes in either polished or matte finishes. There is color all the way through the tile so chips are less visible. When they are laid close together, the grout lines are minimized, Lesnick said.

"Marble is typically a softer stone but is still durable. Porcelain is a nice solid choice for high traffic areas," Lesnick said.

Exotic, darker hardwoods are also making a comeback. Cherry, mahogany and Brazilian walnut are just some of the choices that local residents have been making, Lesnick said.

"Putting hardwood down in long, wide planks creates a natural look, particularly if the wood is mixed in with some stone elements," Lesnick said.

Contrast in the design elements is an essential element to smart flooring designs. Mixing in wood cabinets with a marble floor can create an attractive, complementary look.
