New York Subs
|
What's a stay-at-home mom to do once the kids are grown? How about open a sub shop and deli? That's how Sang McCraw came to own New York Subs. "I stayed home seven years with my kids," McCraw said. "Now they're all in school and I didn't want to go back" to the corporate world. McCraw considered several chains, but ultimately decided to go with New York Subs, an Arizona-based chain that specializes in made-to-order deli sandwiches with a twist. "The concept is unique," McCraw said. "We make hot subs — we warm the meat with the cheese so the cheese is totally melted, then we run the bread through the toaster separately." And while the hot specialty subs are the mainstay, cold subs also are available, McCraw said. To compete in the crowded deli niche, New York Subs also emphasizes quality ingredients, such as Block & Barrel meats, and upscale toppings, such as romaine lettuce instead of the traditional iceberg. Bringing something a little different to the table is working for McCraw, who said the restaurant has earned a solid base of customers who enjoy the difference. Among the most popular offerings are the Reuben ($4.79 for a half sandwich, $5.89 for a whole), a traditional corned beef sandwich; and the Midtown Club, made with turkey, ham and bacon. New York Subs also offers a selection of popular wraps, including the Oriental Chicken Wrap ($4.39), made with grilled chicken, Asian seasoning, onions, lettuce and rice noodles. Several salads, including a Greek ($4.55) and a Caesar ($4.25), are also available. New York Subs is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. The restaurant seats 24; reservations are not accepted. Alcohol is not served; smoking is not permitted. Located at 21 Orchard Park Road; call 676-0506. |
