Quaker Steak & Lube Finishes First

SHARON, Pa. -- Quaker Steak & Lube is spreading its wings with a first-place finish in a Cleveland contest that ranked family-friendly restaurants

The “Best of Cleveland” contest was sponsored by WJW Channel 8. Winners were decided by online voting, said Sarah Litman, spokeswoman for Quaker Steak & Lube, a motor-car themed restaurant known for its buffalo wings and special sauces.

“Since this is a people's choice award, we are honored,” Litman said. “But we believe the big story is not that we won but who we beat -- two international chain restaurants. Being that we are located in a small town in western Pennsylvania with only 13 locations, we were delighted to beat two giant restaurants with locations internationally.

Finishing second in the contest was Dave and Busters, an international chain with 34 locations; Red Robin, an international chain with 253 locations, took fifth place. Cleveland area restaurants Yours Truly and Harpos Sports Club placed third and fourth, according to Litman.

Quaker Steak and Lube was established in 1974. The company began franchising in 1997 and now has two locations in the Cleveland area, as well as restaurants in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

The company has plans to expand to 60 franchises and company-owned locations by 2008, Litman said.
