Comfort Keepers announced today that Allen Riggs, president and CEO of one of the leading international in-home nom-medical care franchise, has been selected as an At-Large delegate for the White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) in Washington, DC. The WHCoA occurs only once a decade and its objective is to creatively assess the implications of aging in America and the impact on the lives of older Americans as well as our nation. As an At-Large delegate, Riggs, along with other representatives from the health care industry, business, academia, and the general population, will suggest aging policy recommendations to the President and Congress to assist the public and private sectors in promoting dignity, health, independence, and economic security of current and future generations of older persons. This year’s theme will be, “The Booming Dynamics of Aging: From Awareness to Action,” which reflects the unique mandate of the 2005 WHCoA to focus on the aging of today and tomorrow. This group includes the 78 million baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) who will begin to turn 60 in 2006.
Topics on the WHCoA agenda include:
“I’m honored to be selected as an At-Large delegate for such a monumental event for senior citizens,” said Riggs. “As the senior population rises, I can identify with the need for quality in home non-medical care. Like many of my generation, retirement is a near term decision for me, and it is imperative that legislators and government bodies, along with healthcare professionals begin to recognize Comfort Keepers as a long-term solution for senior care. Allowing seniors the option of staying in their own home versus alternative care may be a better solution for the senior and can also alleviate the stress on already over-taxed senior resources.
The 1,200 At-Large delegates were selected by the WHCoA Policy Committee following an extensive application process. At-Large delegates will represent a wide group of varied interests and professional including aging and health professionals, baby boomers, business and industry, disability, non-profit, and veterans from all over the country.
Past WHCoA have contributed to establishing many key aging programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the Older Americans Act, the Supplemental Security Income Program, Social Security reforms, and the National Institute on Aging. Past conferences also led to creation of a national nutrition program for older persons, and the national aging network.
