Late last month in Queensbury, N.Y. (about 60 miles north of Albany), franchisees Tom and Jerry Burke and Eddie Binder opened the first of 31 locations covered by a franchise agreement initiated early in 2005 with D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches/Papa Gino’s parent Papa Gino’s, Inc., based in Dedham, Mass. The two brothers, who operate some 20 Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the Albany area, and Binder, a former corporate Vice President with Dunkin’ Donuts, will be developing D’Angelo-only and D’Angelo/Papa Gino’s “dual” sites in the Hartford and Albany markets, and already have at least three other properties secured. This is the first time Papa Gino’s will be operated as a franchise. The site also is the first franchise location to feature the new D’Angelo logo and look, which was designed with WD Partners out of Ohio and is intended to create a more upscale environment that promotes on-site dining and dinner business. I have some great photos of some of the corporate locations that first featured this look and opened last year in various Massachusetts markets. All new corporate and franchise development will feature the new D’Angelo design and logo. Spearheaded by Senior Vice President of Franchise Development Tony Padulo, the D’Angelo/Papa Gino’s strategic growth plan calls for development in existing New England markets as well as new markets including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Orlando. Existing New England markets are the only areas where the company will award single-unit franchise deals. Multi-unit deals – area development agreements covering 20+ units over five years or multi-unit development agreements covering 3-10 units in that period – will be promoted in New England as well as the expansion markets. Upcoming franchise development includes sites in Raynham and Mashpee, Mass., that opened in June 2005, a site in Foxboro, Mass., that opened in July 2005 and sites in Sturbridge, Bellingham and Lowell that are scheduled to open in the first half of 2006. The company also expects franchise locations to open in Colonie, N.Y., Bloomfield, Conn., Glenmont, Conn., and Orlando sometime this year. |
