Grocery franchise expands

The local owners of many Food 4 Less discount grocery stores in San Joaquin County think their new franchise, Rancho San Miguel Market, is so successful in Stockton and Lodi that they're branching out in the Central Valley.

Construction for a 57,000-square-foot Merced store will begin next spring, said John Quinn, president and CEO of the group that owns Food 4 Less discount-grocery warehouses in Stockton, Manteca and Lodi.

That's larger than the 37,000-square-foot stores in Stockton and Lodi, he said, but the Merced store will feature Chinese food and pizza as well as the extensive Mexican food and groceries typically offered in a Rancho San Miguel Market.

The Merced store is expected to open in the fourth quarter of next year.

Quinn said there are three more markets on the drawing boards for the Highway 99 corridor or the coast.
