Many of those procedures were invasive surgery, but more and more treatments are becoming available that are less drastic. And a new business is growing to accommodate the large numbers of people interested in those procedures: medspas.

Randal Haworth, MD, who has been a featured plastic surgeon on The Swan and who has a successful practice in Beverly Hills, has thrown his hat in this new arena as well. He is Chairman and Chief Medical Officer of Radiance Medspa, a company that recently opened the first of five locations planned for the Scottsdale/Phoenix area and plans to franchise its operation nationwide.

“The medspa is geared to what’s happening within the industry,” he notes. He emphasizes they will not have a huge “laundry list” of procedures, concentrating rather on those with the highest percentage of success. And they will be limited to non-invasive ones, plus injectibles, explains President and CEO Charles Engelmann.

What fuels the tremendous popular interest in cosmetic procedures? Haworth points out the reason is deeply rooted in our psychological makeup. “As we age, there’s a growing separation between the subjective sense of how we feel internally – our spirit and energy – and the objective sense” of what we see in the mirror. “Plastic surgery reduces the dichotomy,” he says, which “leads to harmony and internal peace.” Engelmann notes that in many cases now, “you don’t need surgical procedures to have a dramatic effect.”

Medspa results are dramatic but subtle. “Results may be achieved over a period of treatments, with no down time,” says Engelmann. People who are self-conscious about something can deal with it without drawing attention to it or to themselves. “That’s what people like; they know they look better.” Friends will tell them so but not be able to put their finger on why.

That was the experience of Mary Reilly, radio personality on 98.7 The Peak, who accepted an opportunity to try out Radiance Medspa’s services, www.radiancemedspas.com. Hoping to eliminate “some of the wrinkles,” she had a photofacial, Botox® injections in her forehead, collagen around her lips and a half-hour microdermabrasion. The results, she says, were not dramatic – but were wonderful. “The first night, my husband kept looking over at me. He couldn’t tell exactly what (the difference) was.” She got the same reaction the next morning from co-workers at the station.

“I’m a person who’s comfortable with who I am,” Reilly says, adding that she accepts aging and does not try to make herself into someone she’s not. But at the same time, she observes, “There’s nothing wrong with looking the best you can.”
