(Vancouver, BC) - Boston Pizza International Inc. (BPI) has announced a three hundred thousand dollar donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) from its newly established BPI Diabetes Research Fund. The donation was announced at the JDRF Vancouver chapter's 4th annual Rockin' for Research dinner at the Plaza of Nations. The donation, to be awarded over five years, will fund JDRF's Clinical Centre for Islet Cell Transplantation at the University of Alberta, home of the Edmonton Protocol. Islets cell transplantation has emerged as the most promising option for restoring normal blood sugar in people with juvenile (type 1) diabetes. In the procedure, islets - which contain the insulin producing cells that are destroyed in type one diabetes - are taken from a donor's pancreas and transplanted into as person with the disease. "Boston Pizza is thrilled to support the JDRF and pleased that its contribution will assist their efforts to cure this disease that afflicts on so many infants, children and young adults across Canada," says Jim Treliving, CEO and Owner, Boston Pizza International Inc. "Everyone at Boston Pizza is excited about the introduction of BPI Diabetes Research Fund and how it will support the JDRF in their quest to undertake important new research initiatives needed in the fight against diabetes," says George Melville, CEO and Owner, Boston Pizza International Inc.
