In 1983 Closet Factory opened its first factory in Los Angeles, California. Today, almost twenty years later, Closet Factory Franchise Corporation operates over 68 locations nationwide, covering over 100 territories. John La Barbera, founder of the Closet Factory franchise opportunities and engineer by trade, was one of the first to introduce the European style of shelving to the United States. This unique measurement system features pre-drilled holes that allowed for shelves to be adjusted. Realizing that until now, customers had very limited options when it came to organizing their homes. In 1994 Greg Stein joined the company as the new President and Chairman. His vast business experience helped grow Closet Factory from a regional to a national franchise corporation.
