Wheel Fun Rental Resort Bike Rental Company Goes Nationwide
|
Santa Barbara, Calif., Wheel Fun Rentals founder Brian McInerney wants to take his specialty bike franchises across the United States. Wheel Fund Rentals offer a multitude of products, including the three-wheeled Slingshot, the go-cart-style Quad Sport, and numerous surreys, four-wheeled, and pedal-operated carriages, which can accommodate families. The business started with an agreement between McInerney and an Italian surrey producer to distribute the carriages to numerous bicycle rental stores. Eleven years ago, McInerney started opening a few of his own stores; the rentals grew so popular he decided to look into franchising the operation. In 1999, McInerney and Diamond Back Bicycles President Al Stonehouse performed market studies and discovered a strong demand for a amusement-fueled business directed at baby-boomers seeking family activities. McInerney believed his family-sized surreys could meet that need. In December, Jim Colitz, who owns a Uniglobe Travel franchise, signed on as vice president, with Stonehouse serving as president. Since then, Wheel Fun has launched franchises in six California locations, including San Francisco and Fountain Valley, and intends to broaden the 225 rental outlets that bought sophisticated bikes from the firm. McInerney figures that the majority of beachfront bike rental sites manufactured between 75 and 100 rentals every day during the summer, with prices ranging between $6 an hour to $25 per hour for surreys. Success magazine has selected Wheel Fun as one of the Top 10 Hottest New Franchise Concepts of 2000. |
